Shostakovich, Dmitri (1906-1975)
Description:
Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10 is a work that Dmitri Liss has a particularly deep attachment to, and although he released the same work with the South Netherlands Philharmonic in 2019 (recorded the previous year), this is a re-recording of this great work in just three years. The work, which is said to depict liberation from the oppression of Stalin's dictatorship, is now recorded live with another hand-picked orchestra, the Ural Philharmonic of Russia. The work has a special meaning for Liss, whose heart goes out to Shostakovich, who lived in a time when it was difficult for composers to compose freely. What the piece means to Russian musicians is self-evident: that they are playing it with deep respect for a composer who did so in his own unique and noble way at a time when it was dangerous to be honest about one's personal opinions. The intensity of the second movement and the tremendous drive in the finale are wonderful performances that contain their thoughts and feelings. Naxos Japan
