Selaginella pulvinata is a lovely evergreen perennial, commonly treated like terrarium mosses. This variety of club moss or spike moss forms dense, vibrant green tufts that grow in a rosette-like pattern. Depending on the age of the plant, it may also develop a "trunk", giving it a miniature tree appearance. In natural settings, S. pulvinata can be found growing on limestone rocks at high elevations, making it relatively hardy and resistant to drier conditions once mature.
One of its unique traits is its response to changing environments. When dry, its fronds curl inwards, almost as if to preserve energy, and once moistened, they fan out and redevelop a rich green hue. Keep it in a growing medium like sphagnum moss or peat moss, and avoid waterlogging. Mist it daily and allow excess water to run off its leaves and into the medium. While it grows slower than other well-known Selaginella species, this moss-like plant is great for anyone looking to add an uncommong addition to terrariums, vivariums, or planted enclosures.
