Linn Ekstatik Moving Coil Cartridge

The Ekstatik is Linn's flagship cartridge. It sits at the top of the range above the Kandid and Kendo, and it was designed from the outset as a system component — specifically as the correct partner for the Ekos SE tonearm on a reference Klimax LP12 build. At £6,050, it is a significant commitment, and it delivers accordingly.

The Ekstatik introduces two material choices that set it apart from everything below it in the range: a sapphire cantilever and a micro-ridge stylus. Both are deliberate and consequential.

Sapphire Cantilever

Cantilever material determines how quickly and accurately stylus motion is transmitted to the generator. Boron — used in the Kandid and Kendo — is already excellent. Sapphire is stiffer: harder, denser, and with higher internal resonant frequencies that sit well outside the audio band. The practical result is faster, more accurate signal transmission from groove to generator. Transients are cleaner, high-frequency detail is more resolved, and the overall impression is of a cartridge that is not adding anything of its own to the signal.

Micro-Ridge Stylus

The micro-ridge stylus profile makes contact with the groove wall across a larger area and at a more precise angle than a fine-line or super-fine-line profile. It follows the groove geometry more faithfully, which translates to lower distortion — particularly in the high-frequency range and towards the inner grooves of a record where groove modulation is most demanding. It also distributes tracking load over a wider area, which is gentler on both the record and the stylus itself.

Body and Construction

The Ekstatik body is machined from 7075-grade aluminium in a honeycomb pattern — material is removed strategically to reduce overall mass to approximately 7 grams while retaining the rigidity that prevents energy accumulating in the body and returning to the generator. Aluminium-bronze threaded inserts are used at the mounting points, and the body features Diamond-like Carbon (DLC) coating on the chassis.

The Ekstatik uses a triple-point mounting system for precise, reproducible installation geometry, and connects via 1.2mm gold pins.

Pairing with the Ekos SE

Linn designed the Ekstatik and Ekos SE as a matched system. The arm and cartridge share design intent — the arm's titanium structure and the cartridge's sapphire cantilever both prioritise rapid energy dissipation and minimal storage. Together, they represent the current reference standard for LP12 performance.

Who Is It For?

The Ekstatik is for LP12 owners building or running at Klimax level — specifically with an Ekos SE arm, Keel SE sub-chassis, and reference-grade phono stage. It is not an upgrade to consider in isolation: the Ekstatik's capabilities are most fully expressed when the rest of the system can keep up. On the correct build, it is the finishing piece that resolves all the detail the LP12 platform is capable of retrieving.
