How does it work?

ALFX sensors use Bluetooth LE technology, which gives the utility control of data collection and follow-up. Water escaping from pipes generates tiny vibrations that can be sensed hundreds of feet away. ALFX sensors collect, process and track vibrations every night.

Utility personnel:

1. Read sensor data and sync to the ALFX cloud from a vehicle.

2. View analysis of suspected leaks in the ALFX Web Dashboard.

3. Then use the ALFX sensors to pinpoint and confirm leaks.

ALFX is significantly lower cost than other approaches, allowing blanket coverage, proactive operations, and a 1-year payback.

What can I expect to achieve?

ALFX saves water, energy, time and money. A 5-year ALFX service plan can pay for itself in the first year. All plans are renewable. 

• Conserving water reduces purchase and/or production costs.

• Pipeline integrity saves significant electricity otherwise used for pumping leakage.

• Continuous surveying enables proactive maintenance, timely pipe repairs, and reduces the likelihood of catastrophic pipe breaks.

• Controlling leakage extends the useful life of pipes by reducing corrosion and pressure stress.

• Avoiding treated water run-off cuts pollution and expensive waste & storm water processing.

Sample Cost of the System

Comprehensive coverage of a water system requires 4 - 7 ALFX sensors per 10 fire hydrants with metallic water mains requiring fewer than non-metallic water mains. The design of water distribution systems varies but, generally, fewer sensors are required downtown, with more sensors in rural areas. We have affordable plans for municipalities of all sizes.

Example small town utility:

• Population - 5,000

• Distribution pipe - 40 miles

• Number of ALFX sensors for full coverage - 100

• Total cost of ALFX system, includes 100 sensors, mobile & online GIS, 5 years of service (Renewable after 5 years) - $26,300 - This comes to less than $263 per logger for 5 years, or less than $53/year per hydrant monitored!

• Standard packages are available with 100, 250, 500, or 1000 loggers for 1 or 5 year renewable terms. Custom quantity and smaller packages can be quoted on request.

LEAK CORRELATION CAPABILITY: The Screen shot below shows a leak correlation where more than one logger can detect the same leak sound. The leak is at the point where the yellow and red meet on the water line. The details on the left show the correlation peak sound graph and the footage the leak can be expected from each logger.
