This rare Confederate Postmaster’s Provisional stamp was issued by W.D. McNish in Nashville, Tennessee, during the early months of the Civil War, before the Confederate central postal system began printing its own issues. The design features an ornate engraved frame surrounding an oval with “PAID 5” at center and thirteen stars symbolizing the Confederate states. The inscription “W.D. McNISH P.M. NASHVILLE, TENN.” encircles the central oval. Printed locally in a striking red shade, it represents the ingenuity and resourcefulness of Southern postmasters who produced their own adhesives to maintain mail service under wartime conditions.
Philatelic Significance:
Nashville provisionals are highly sought after by Confederate and classic U.S. collectors due to their rarity, fine engraving, and historical ties to the secession period. Genuine examples are scarce, particularly unused specimens with clear margins like this one.
