I find this bowl about as beautiful as it gets. With striking, rich black design against lush cream slip, and exposed clay on the interior and bottom, I am almost certain this bowl is either Cochiti or Santo Domingo, from Sandoval County in New Mexico, though it is unsigned and I am not certain of how old it is. I love the relationship between the curvaceous form of the bowl and the almost wave-like black pattern that runs horizontally across its surface, giving it a fantastic dynamism. It has a wonderful presence and a fire cloud on one side from the traditional outdoor firing. Oh, so lovely.
The bowl measures 4 1/4" in diameter at widest and 2 1/2" tall, with a 3 1/4" radius at its opening. It is in good vintage condition, with no chips or cracks, and a nice patina.
