'The design of this necklace is symbolic of my culture,' says Ila Suleyman who calls it Talatu Gilga, the Mamprusi name usually given to boys born on a Wednesday. From northern Ghana, Mamprusi people are predominantly rice and cattle farmers who use cow hide to create various items including jewelry and accessories. For this necklace, Suleyman selects a round pendant carved from bull horn to center multiple strands of yellow leather. The necklace fastens with a toggle crafted from recycled plastic.
