About the B-2

The B-2 Spirit, commonly known as the Stealth Bomber, traces its origins to the Cold War era, when the United States sought to develop an aircraft capable of penetrating heavily defended Soviet airspace undetected. Initiated in the late 1970s under the Advanced Technology Bomber (ATB) program, the B-2 was designed to evade radar detection through a combination of innovative stealth technology, aerodynamic efficiency, and advanced materials. Northrop Grumman, the primary contractor, leveraged its experience from earlier projects like the YB-49 flying wing to create a revolutionary design. The program was shrouded in secrecy, reflecting the high stakes of maintaining a technological edge over adversaries during a period of intense geopolitical tension.

The B-2’s development was a monumental undertaking, marked by significant technical challenges and escalating costs. Unveiled to the public on November 22, 1988, at Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale, California, the aircraft’s distinctive flying-wing shape and radar-absorbent materials were unlike anything seen before. Its first flight occurred on July 17, 1989, piloted by Northrop test pilot Bruce Hinds and Colonel Richard Couch, taking off from Palmdale and landing at Edwards Air Force Base. However, the program faced criticism for its price tag, which ballooned to approximately $2 billion per aircraft when factoring in research, development, and production costs. Despite the expense, the U.S. Air Force pressed forward, driven by the strategic need for a long-range, stealthy bomber capable of delivering both conventional and nuclear payloads.

The B-2 entered operational service with the U.S. Air Force in April 1997, assigned to the 509th Bomb Wing at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri. Its combat debut came during the Kosovo War in 1999, where it demonstrated its ability to strike targets with precision while remaining virtually invisible to enemy radar. The aircraft played key roles in subsequent conflicts, including operations in Afghanistan (2001), Iraq (2003), and Libya (2011), showcasing its versatility and effectiveness. With a range of approximately 6,000 nautical miles (extendable with aerial refueling) and a payload capacity of up to 40,000 pounds, the B-2 became a cornerstone of America’s strategic deterrence, capable of striking anywhere in the world from U.S. soil.

Over its history, the B-2 has remained a rare and exclusive asset, with only 21 units ever built, one of which (the Spirit of Ohio) was lost in a 2008 crash at Andersen Air Force Base in Guam due to a maintenance error. The fleet was reduced to 20 operational aircraft, each named after a U.S. state, such as the Spirit of Missouri or Spirit of California. Continuous upgrades have kept the B-2 relevant, including enhancements to its avionics, weapons systems, and stealth coatings, though its high maintenance costs—estimated at $135,000 per flight hour—have fueled debates about its long-term viability. As of March 12, 2025, the B-2 remains in service, but its role is gradually being overshadowed by the next-generation B-21 Raider, also developed by Northrop Grumman, signaling the eventual retirement of this iconic stealth bomber.
