Striking rinzu silk kimono in dusky pink with contrasting print featuring traditional flowers and peacock in shades of white, green, red, yellow, gold and teal. Part lined with red and pink silk. Rinzu garments are often worn for formal occasions and weddings.

The red lining harks back to a time when, during periods of control in Japan, the types and colours of fabric worn were restricted. People got around banned colours, such as beni-red, by using these for undergarments or linings, so you might get a glimpse from within a sleeve, which was seen as alluring. The insignia on the back of the robe is probably a family emblem, and the fact that the design appears only below the waist means that this was created after the mid 19th century, although this kimono probably dates from the middle to late 20th century. 

The Peony or ‘botan’ is known as the ‘king of flowers’ in Japan, and is associated with good fortune and honour. The peacock is an auspicious bird too, being associated with the Buddhist goddess Kannon - the goddess of mercy, compassion and kind heartedness. The peacock is a also symbol of good health and is said to be able to counteract poison, as well as symbolising the beauty and integrity of showing our true colours.

One size 10-16. 58 inches/147.5 cm long. Very good vintage condition, just a couple of small marks reflecting the age of this garment, which is probably from the mid 20^th century. Belt not included.
